The Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office will be using both of our buildings today for training, so please do not be alarmed if you see law enforcement vehicles around our campus. The secondary building will be closed starting at 12:00 p.m., and the elementary building will be closed starting at 5:00 p.m. We are proud to offer our facilities to support the training efforts of the Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office.

Last week a few of our teachers attended the Elevate Your Classroom Conference in Las Vegas, where they learned alongside educators from across the country and gathered new ideas to enhance student learning.

Throughout the conference, teachers were inspired by keynote speakers including Ron Clark, Mr. Greg, Taylor Cassidy, and Gerry Brooks, who share powerful messages about student engagement, relationship-building, inclusive classrooms, and the joy of teaching.

Teachers also participated in breakout sessions focused on literacy, writing, mathematics, science, classroom management, STEM, technology and AI, and social-emotional learning. Each session provided practical, research-based strategies and classroom-ready resources that can be implemented immediately.

They look forward to bringing these new ideas back to the classrooms as they continue to provide engaging, high-quality learning experiences for all of our students!

What is an Operating Levy? An operating levy is a voter-approved funding source that helps pay for the day-to-day costs of educating students. Operating levy funds support teachers, classroom instruction, student support services, technology, academic programs, activities, transportation, and other operational expenses. Unlike state funding, operating levy dollars are generated locally and help school districts maintain programs and services when state funding does not keep pace with rising costs. For taxpayers, an operating levy is calculated based on the value of a home, garage, and one acre of land surrounding the residence. Agricultural land beyond the home site is not subject to the operating levy. This means that for most farmers, the levy applies only to the residential portion of their property, not their farmland. What is a Building Referendum? A building referendum, often called a bond referendum, is a voter-approved funding source used for major facility projects. These funds can be used for building construction, additions, renovations, roofs, parking lots, safety improvements, and other long-term capital needs. Building referendum funds cannot be used for teacher salaries, classroom programs, or daily operating expenses. Unlike an operating levy, a building referendum is generally based on the value of all taxable property within the district, including agricultural land, commercial property, and residential property. As a result, the tax impact and who pays for the referendum can be significantly different than an operating levy.
What the Levy Funds: Academics: The Operating Levy funds academic opportunities to ensure scholars can access high-quality, rigorous learning that will prepare them for the future. including: Career and Technical Education (CTE), including over 43 unique courses that lead to ten different pathways. College and Career Readiness, including college and career preparation opportunities, financial aid events, etc. Updated Curriculum Staff Professional Development Staffing: The levy funds staff who ensure our students have the support they need to thrive, including: Classroom Support, including teachers, paraprofessionals, and substitute teachers Special Education, including Occupational Therapists and Speech Language Pathologists Health and Safety, including Nurses, Counselors, Mental Health staff, Custodians, and Safety and Security staff Activities: The Operating Levy funds enrichment activities to support the whole child, including: Art Music 100% Athletics, including high school and middle school competitive sports (what percent of our students are in sports?) 100% Co-curricular activities (what percent of our students are in co-curricular activities?) Operations: The levy funds day-to-day services that keep our schools running, including: Transportation Nutrition Services Utilities Facilities Maintenance A Simple Way to Think About It A building referendum helps pay for the school building itself, while an operating levy helps pay for the educational experiences and opportunities that happen inside the building. Over the coming weeks and months, LCWM will share additional information about school funding, the district's financial outlook, and the reasons an operating levy is being considered. The annual Scrubs Camp is happening right now at the high school! We love being able to host this amazing camp that the South Central Service Coop puts on every year for area youth interested in healthcare!
