Screenings Offered at LCWM

The provided information outlines the screenings conducted in the LCWM school district for both elementary and secondary students. Here are the key points:

Elementary Screenings:

  1. Hearing and Vision Screenings:

    • Conducted every fall for recommended grades.

    • Male Kindergarteners undergo color vision screening.

  2. Dental Screening and Fluoride Treatment: (on hold starting 2023)

    • Open Door Clinic provides free dental screenings and fluoride treatment.

    • Involves checking teeth for cavities and providing fluoride treatment free of charge.

    • Students in 2nd and 5th grades may receive free sealants if needed.

    • Typically occurs in the fall and sometimes in the spring.

    • Done with parental permission.

Secondary Screenings:

  1. Hearing Screenings:

    • Conducted for grades 8th and 11th

  2. Vision Screenings:

    • Conducted for grades 7th and 10th

  3. Scoliosis Screening (optional):

    • Done during the spring for 6th-grade girls with parental permission

Rescreening and Referral:

  • If students do not pass their initial hearing or vision screening, they will be rescreened within the next few months.

  • If they do not pass during the rescreening, a referral letter will be sent to the parent/guardian at earliest convenience.

  • It is emphasized that screenings are not a substitute for a comprehensive vision exam. Parents are encouraged to consult an eye doctor if they have concerns.

Request for Screenings:

  • Screenings can be performed on students at the request of parents, teachers, or as part of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) review.

  • Parents or teachers can contact the health office to request screenings.

The information provided ensures that students in the LCWM school district receive regular screenings for hearing, vision, dental health, and scoliosis. The emphasis on the importance of comprehensive vision exams and the option for additional screenings upon request demonstrates a commitment to the overall health and well-being of the students.

Need help getting an eye exam or paying for Glasses? Here are some Resources for you!

          1. New Eyes assists low-income individuals in the United States. We provide a basic pair of eyeglasses with single or lined bifocal lenses.

    https://new-eyes.org/application

  • Applicants must have an eyeglasses prescription dated within the last 24 months, including their pupillary distance (PD) measurement.

  • Applications are submitted online. It is optimal for social service agencies/health advocates to apply on a client’s behalf.  *****this includes the school health office*****

  • However, individuals who do not have access to an agency may apply directly but must provide proof of eligibility.

  • Each application has a $10 non-refundable application fee for administrative costs.

  • If the application is approved, a unique e-voucher number is emailed with a link to our eyeglass ordering site and instructions on how to order eyeglasses.

  • Approved applicants must order their glasses through New Eyes' online eyeglasses dispenser at neweyesglasses.org

  • From another nurse at school: It is for people who have a prescription in the last 2 years & they send you 2 pairs of glasses for $10. I used it for a student who lost his glasses. I contacted the eye doctor and got the necessary information (prescription, pupillary distance, etc). We ordered the glasses and had within a week. I was impressed with the quality of the glasses. It doesn't help those students that need to get an eye exam, but I have a lot of students that lose or break their glasses.
